Being on Hornby Island in 1962 to 1966
By John McLachlan
My dad, George, used to shoot in 8mm and then Super 8mm for years including our first trips to Hornby Island.
About ten years ago, I made some small QuickTime videos of some of this early footage. The video quality is unfortunately, not very good (especially in the 1962 video) and the narration is non-existent or really corny, but it gives a little glimpse of things back then.
Enjoy.

John,
Quite frankly I can’t think of a nicer way to have spent part of what might be last day of the world as we know it! Almost 12 minutes of pure delight watching your parents with their two sons, you a toddler and Rob the big brother. I know your father is an artist and I think your brother is a cinematographer or something like that…your father took great movies and I am betting the background music is you. Am I right?
I can understand how you came to love Hornby Island…Thank you.

Judy,
Glad you enjoyed these. There are some poignant moments for me in them. In the 1966 one for example, there is a scene of my grandparents waiting for the ferry, driving onto it in their very cool Thunderbird and then my grandfather waving from the departing boat. It’s almost like a message being sent from him today.
Though I edited these movies down, in today’s terms, there was still way less than what we shoot now with video. In some ways, there’s something to be said for having less footage. It makes what you have more precious.
John, Love the footage of Whaling Station without the cottages and big house on the point! You really have roots here!
